The General Vanier Foundation from the Association of the Royal 22e Regiment, recently contributed $1,000.00 in support for the 2012 activities for the Quebec Branch of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Canada. The program assists fifteen military members from the Valcartier Garrison in the rehabilitation process for physical or emotional injury by teaching them the principles of fly fishing and fly tying. At the end of the teaching period, a fishing trip is planned where they can try out their newly learned skills and share their personal field experiences. During this period, participants’ will be supervised by qualified resource persons to assist them in this therapy. We wish them a great experience.

Moby Nets is a family run business in Maple Ridge B.C. creating handcrafted nets that are so much more than functional. The owner of Moby Nets Don Chatwin and his family obviously take pride in their craft and that pride extends to our Canadian Soldiers. Don and his family have pledged up to 40 nets this year to go to our Soldiers as they complete the basic training in fly fishing and fly tying through the year.
While we at Project Healing Waters Canada, seek out Canadian businesses who are willing to support our wounded warriors Don came forward himself and offered the support of his business.
It is our hope that Canadians will support all businesses supporting us so that they may continue their involvement with our fly fishing programs.
The following is an excerpt from the Moby Nets website.
“All Mobynets are built from the same design – a single piece of solid oak, the strongest and most durable of the hardwoods.

We at Mobynets do not believe in cutting thin strips of wood, stacking and then gluing them back together to form the shape of the net. In time as the net frame flexes, those glue joints start to fail, resulting in delamination of the wood strips.

That is why Mobynets has become an industry leader in the art of steam bending. When a piece of solid oak is steamed to the correct temperature, its wood cells begin to elasticize; this allows us to bend the wood easily into its desired shape. Once the wood has cooled its cell structure returns to normal, making for a strong, flexible and durable net that will provide years of reliable use.

The attractive inlays are made from the finest of hardwoods, walnut, maple, and padauk. Each of these beautiful woods add durability and strength to each and every Mobynet.

All Mobynets come with a soft non abrasive fish friendly mesh. The nets flat bottom design allows the fish to be held securely and comfortably.

The two coats of marine grade penetrating varnish with UV blocker will provide years of protection from the elements.

Mobynets offers a great variety of quality built nets that meet the needs of the most discriminating fisherman. You will not find a stronger or more durable wooden landing net anywhere.”

Dwayne fishes the Morell River, the West River and sometimes the Margaree River in Cape Breton.
Dwayne is very active in supporting the environment that the Atlantic Salmon inhabit on PEI . When he is not fishing Dwayne is active in too many other aspects of the sport to mention here. Suffice it to say, you will travel many miles before you find another fly fisher who is as well experienced.
dwayne started fishing at the age of 5 years and discovered Atlantic Salmon in 1988, an addiction he continues to feed.
In Dwayne’s own words:

I am a happily married father of two and my kids, I am happy to report have a great interest in flyfishing and tying. I started a flytying/guiding business in 1996 that fills in nicely between my real career as a commercial lobsterman. I am an outspoken individual when it comes to conservation of species, particularly Salar, and have been 100% Catch and release for close to 20 years. I can also boast that I have never killed an Atlantic Salmon, something I am very proud to say. Recently my business (Fly Fish The Island) was recognized by the Atlantic Salmon Federation with a “commitment to live Release” certificate. Something I am also very proud of.
My friend(and mentor) Scott Mitchell started me off one winter tying a few for the up coming spring season. I hooked and landed my first salmon on a fly i tied myself. I’ll never forget Scotty for the path he started me on!!!
I have aways followed the creed of the salmon tyer in that I like a durable fly and a little fuller profile. I like the mantra that your hook should rust before the fly comes apart. I think what my flies bring to the sport is quality, and soul. I like that my flies and my style of tying have been born out of 100′s of days on the water and figuring out what seems to work and what is just hype. As an example I can say that a neat head is a must(for durability) head size is just a selling point,, nothing more. Some tyers that have made a mark on my style were Poul Jorgenson and Warren Duncan.
Published works : Being included in Don Macleans “A Little Thing I Tied Myself”
Signature Line : Your conduct on a salmon river speaks volumes as to who you are as a person

Dwayne stepped in to help when an individual Soldier contacted us and asked if we could place him in a program. I told Dwayne about him and a few short months later when the Charlottetown Fly Tyers began their winter meetings, Dwayne took him along.
Dwayne Miller is our guy on PEI.

To those Canadians – injured in service to their Country, we thank you.

To those Canadians – serving our Country, or in the service of others on our behalf, we thank you.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we Forget.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP,
THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.
Been posted to various and sometime exotic such as Valcartier, Germany, Goose Bay Labrador, Gagetown, Ottawa, and Petawawa and now finally back home Valcartier.

I learn fly fishing when I was 8 year old. Since then, I’m avid fly fisher and take every opportunity to wet my line. While in Goose Bay, I taught myself fly tying since then, I tie my own flies. I also participate in a fly fishing forum giving advice (2 cent worth) or telling my fishing stories. On the same forum, I publish some of my fly creation for the benefit of other fly fishermen.

How did I got involved with this project is not by accident but by a ricochet from my involvement with a youth group here in Quebec City. I was looking for a sponsor when I wrote a request letter to Jack’s company. Jack got me in contact with Kerry and the story goes on.

I think this is a great project and I want to help out and bring my knowledge and expertise to this project. Been in Afghanistan myself and while I was working at the hospital, I seen our wounded soldiers. Now, it is time for me to give more to them.
